Weekly News 10-3-25

 Weekly News for 2-P 10-3-25

*Library books on Monday and sneakers on Tuesday for PE

*There is no school on Friday, October 10th for a Professional Development Day or  Monday, October 13th for Indigenous Peoples Day

*In math we worked on skip counting patterns with 2s, 5s, 10s and 100s. Students filled in number grids with 3 digit numbers. We explored odd and even numbers and practiced identifying patterns in a series of numbers. We also reviewed addition patterns with doubles facts as they relate to odd/even numbers. We learned some fun new games to help us practice our skills.

*During reading workshop we continued our focus on the genre of fiction and practiced giving evidence that a book falls into this category. We also worked on identifying the author’s message in a book and answering questions about a fictional text with complete sentences ( a challenging skill that takes a lot of practice).

*In writing workshop we worked with poetry, focusing on a place poem. Each child chose a special place and brainstormed sensory details about that place, before writing their first draft. Later in the week we learned to add a simile to our poem and then revised and edited our drafts. Our connected grammar work was about singular and plural nouns.

*We have completed our fourth spelling unit on short 0 words. Next up is short u words. Our phonics work this week focused on reviewing silent e exception rules and -es ending rules.

*This week our science work centered on a new investigation called “How Could You Get More Birds to Come to Your Bird Feeder.” In this lesson, students investigated which kinds of birds are likely to visit a bird feeder based on what they eat. Students drew their own bird feeder design to attract a specific type of bird and then built a prototype of their bird feeder using available materials. To finish the unit we learned about a colony of bats and its two habitats - we compared and contrasted them and all the biodiversity that surrounded them in their habitats.

Weekly News 9-26-25

 Weekly News for 2-P 9-26-25

*Library books are due on Mondays

Sneakers Tuesdays for PE

MATH:  We completed unit 2 work on place value with lots of practice doing expanded notation and decomposing numbers into hundreds, tens and ones. We also compared three digit numbers using symbols. We will do the unit 2 test on Monday and that will come home soon for you to see. Unit 3 will focus on patterns in numbers.

READING:  During reading workshop we practiced identifying fiction as a genre. We also learned how to tell our opinion about a book. Kids did a great job explaining why they thought a book was funny or silly or serious.

WRITING: In writing workshop we learned how to write character sketches and each child took a piece all the way through the writing process. We were introduced to nouns, both common and proper and practiced using them in our sentences. Students also did a great job revising their drafts by adding details!

SPELLING/PHONICS: We have completed our third spelling unit on short i

words. Next up is short o words. In UFLI this week we reviewed digraphs and silent e words.

SCIENCE: In Go2 Science we got to see Beth and Curtis explore the life of a lobsterman. We learned about lobsters, their anatomy and how lobster traps

work. We also explored crabs and other creatures who live on the ocean floor!

This week our other science work centered on a new investigation called “Why

Do Frogs Ribbit?” This lesson is a case study in biodiversity using the frogs of North America. In the activity, “Who's Calling?” students learn to identify frogs by their unique calls and investigate which of two locations has a greater variety of frogs. After listening to recordings of frog calls, students create words that will remind them of the sounds, and then use those words to identify frog sounds in different environments.  We had a great time working as a team to figure out

these frog sounds!
