Exploring Nonfiction

This week our second graders had lots of time during reading workshop to explore a variety of nonfiction texts.  We began by reading several books together ( ex:  a biography, a book about communities) and learned to identify the various text features you might find in a nonfiction book.  Some of these features included:  the table of contents, photographs, captions, headings, the glossary and index, tables, charts and diagrams.  Readers were able to choose books that were of interest to them and began to practice recording facts in their own words.
