The most exciting parts of our math lessons this week were collecting data on both our arm span lengths and standing long jump distances. This project integrated measurement practice, with tallying data, graphing the information, and then finding the median or middle value. Second graders love to work with data and are becoming very good at drawing bar graphs. To find the median value we have to put all the numbers in sequential order first. This can be a hard step to remember. We will continue to hone this skill in math box practice.

Another standing long jump gets measured. |

Students work in teams to mark and measure jumps. |
Teams of 3 worked to get accurate measurements. |
Next we collected arm span data. |
To find the median value we sequenced our data from smallest to largest. |
As a final step we removed data on either end continually until we were left with our final middle numbers - 49 cm. |
