Week of 4-26-24

 Weekly News for 2-P 4-26-24

*Author Melissa Stewart will be at WCS on May 14th!

*We have our second trip to the Maine Maritime Museum on May 2nd. Please watch the weather forecast as we will be mainly outdoors and kids will need proper outerwear.

*Our spring concert is on April 30th at 6:00 p.m.

*Math this week included lots of review work on 2D and 3D shapes. We completed our unit 8 assessment work. Next up we will kick off unit 9 on fractions and equal shares. We have just one math unit left in the second grade math program! We practiced the partial sums algorithm daily and kids are taking turns leading us through the steps. We are also practicing math facts every day.

*During reading workshop we worked on comparing and contrasting nonfiction fiction texts. We did this through venn diagrams and charts, where we explored how settings, events and characters were alike and different. We also were able to name similarities and differences between two texts full of factual information. Students are using great language as they talk about important points in texts and how they match up with each other…or how they do not match up!

*This week our poetry sessions included writing “diamond” poems and “two-words-on-a-line” poems that focused on verbs and adjectives. We also wrote lovely Earth Day poems on Monday after doing our Scholastic News that helped us think carefully about how we treat our planet.

*Our spelling focus was digraphs and our phonics work was centered on rule changes when adding suffixes (dropping the e or changing a final y to an i).

*We worked through another matter investigation and in this lesson students learned how new materials are invented. In the activity “Bouncy Glass Inventions,” students came up with creative ideas for inventions that use an exciting futuristic material: glass that bounces and stretches like rubber! We also did a fun exploration called “Can you build a house out of cards?”  Students worked hard on two challenges to build towers using only index cards and paper clips. The teamwork and perseverance was fantastic. We had a lot of success and had to think really hard about the properties of materials that make them fit or unfit for building.

The kids love to play customizable UFLI games with our current phonics patterns.

A little rainy day inside recess fun!

Mystery Science challegne!

Can you build a 12 inch paper house with index cards and paper clips only?

Some of us used folding techniques to make the cards stronger.

Some of us cut slits in the sides to make the structure.

Success!

The second challenge was getting a 6 inch house to hold a book!
