Weekly News 3-12-26

 Weekly News for 2-P 3-12-26

*Thanks for continuing to send boots and indoor shoes (our playground is very muddy and wet!).

*In math we kicked off unit 9 with 3 digit addition work. We spent time adding 10 and 100 to 3 digit numbers mentally. Then we practiced adding two 3-digit numbers with and without regrouping. We are using base 10 blocks for this work right now and our place value knowledge is really helping with that! We are also practicing telling time to 5 minute intervals and addition facts every day.

*In reading workshop we worked on identifying how a main character in a fictional book responds to challenges or events and WHY they respond that way. Lots of great work with quality literature and critical thinking skills!

*We continued the annual Chickadee Award program and heard a new book every day in specials. In our booklets we gave each book a star rating, told about the author’s message and recorded our favorite part.

*In Science, as part of our “Material Magic” unit,  we did another investigation about matter, called “Can you really fry an egg on a hot sidewalk?” We learned about insulation and how some materials insulate better than others. It was fun to test different materials to see which would be the best oven mitt. Styrofoam was the winner!

*In writing we kicked off our third and final writing book of the year and began to learn about opinion writing. Students chose an opinion about school and supported that opinion with reasons and evidence. They felt this work was quick and easy after the longer research piece they just finished. Students revised their work and published final drafts, as always. Our grammar tie-in this week was adverbs.

*Our focus was on double consonant words in spelling this week. During our phonics time we practiced prefixes and suffixes. We are reading and writing multisyllable words!
