Lab Reports: Connection between Science and Writing

You may have heard about our combined science and writing workshops this week.  We delved into another science experiment related to force and motion; this time on catapults.  Young scientists had this question to answer:
"Using the catapult we build will the ping-pong ball or the cotton ball go farther?"

After we reviewed the steps scientists follow to plan, conduct and record an experiment, we got down to the business of catapult-building.  Second graders had MANY ideas!  In order to start the actual experiment they had to hypothesize, record materials and plan the procedures they would use.  Then the fun began and we got to see how far the ping-pong/cotton balls would travel.  We then worked on recording our data in a table and practiced writing a careful conclusion.

We always start with a question and hypothesis!
