Our reading workshops have been centered around the comprehension strategy of creating mental images. This strategy involves the ability of readers to make a picture in their head as they listen to or read a story. This helps readers understand and process events and details. This ability can be an indication that a reader truly comprehends the text. When we begin to work on mental images we actually cover the book we are reading to the kids, so that they have the opportunity to practice building the picture in their head as they listen. After hearing the story, students draw and record what their mental image was. Children are tuning into specific details and doing strong work creating their own mental images. Ask your child which book was their favorite this week (they may mention The Snagglegrollop, The Salamander Room, The Napping House, or The Greyling). Below are some samples of our work:
