Reading Workshop - the Big Idea

During reading workshop we have been working on a new learning target: BIG IDEAS.  We are teaching students to figure out what the author’s message is in a story.  Students are learning that the big idea is not a detail, but a more general theme that the author is trying to communicate.  Some of the books we have read are Oliver Button is a Sissy,  Weslandia, Old Henry, and Miss Rumphius.
Samples of our "Big Idea" work after reading Barbara Cooney's Miss Rumphius.
