Fraction Games

One of the great methods Everyday Math employs to help teach students about fractions is using fraction cards.  Each student has a set of 16 fraction cards which list the fraction by number on one side and a shaded drawing of the fraction on the other side.  This visual really helps second graders develop a solid understanding of what each fraction looks like.  We are able to use the shaded parts to compare fractions to each other.  For instance, kids can place the 2/3 card next to the 1/3 card to see that 2/3 is larger.  We can also begin to identify equivalent fractions as the cards that have the same amount of blue shading.  We have learned two games, The Equivalent Fractions Game, and Fraction Top-it, to help us practice comparing fractions.  We will use these cards throughout the rest of the year to help solidify our fraction knowledge. We completed unit 8 in math and assessed students on their fraction knowledge.
