In writing we dipped our feet into a new genre of writing: opinion writing. We began with writing pieces to support our opinions about the best food or best toys. Students were familiar with opinions from our recent reading work in this area. Then we shifted to using a familiar text, Mercy Watson to the Rescue, to start thinking in terms of what our opinions are about books. Our work now will be to learn to write book recommendations, in letter format, to other readers.
