Highlights of The Week

Our learning target in Reading Workshop was to identify the BIG IDEA (or theme) in a book

Waiting in line to vote on Wednesday in the state-wide Student Mock Election

"Registering" to vote.  8th graders were our helpers.

We read passages about insects and looked back to the text to find answers and information.

Our Scholastic News was about the vampire bat.  Students got more practice going back to the text to find proof or evidence to answer questions.

This Book Club was enthusiastically reading and discussing their book!

On Friday we labeled pictures of our class mealworm culture (can you spot apple pieces, mealworms, shed skin, and beetles?!).

During writing workshop we practiced the above strategies for using strong words as we write narratives.

Student labeling in scientist's notebook

On Friday we finished the 6th and final book in the Mercy Watson series.  Students did a book response about which one they loved the most.  Luckily there are two more companion books to dig into next week!

As we began unit 3 we practiced explaining our thinking about addition strategies through diagrams.  A follow-up activity had us adding written explanations as well.

Cover of a small moment story - kids spent three sessions "fancying up" their writing for our upcoming Writer's Celebration!
