Highlights of the Week

Visiting the 6th Grade Ancient History Museum on Monday

6ht Graders explained their projects to us.

In math we practiced drawing arrays and writing matching multiplication facts.

We read a fascinating Science Spin issue about 3-D printers and prosthetic arms.  We have visited the kindergarten's 3-D printer and liked reading about its real world use.

We wrote about the author's purpose for writing this particular issue.  Students knew right away that it was to INFORM us as readers.

Extra PE this week as the school-wide Boxtops winners - yay!

Mr. Libby read us a great Chickadee book on Thursday!

We kicked off our "Author's Purpose" reading workshop focus on Monday with a hilarious book called Grandpa's Teeth.  The kids knew this book was written to ENTERTAIN us.  And it did!

In PE on Tuesday Mr. Hutchings read us another Chickadee nominee.

This chart helps us think about WHY an author writes a text. We've used it as an anchor to help us when we are making thoughtful decisions about author's purpose.

We read "An Immigrant's Tale" in our Friday Scholastic News magazine.

We knew this issue was to INFORM us as learners about immigration and one immigrant's specific journey.

In writing we began to work on opinion writing.  We reread an old favorite, Mercy Watson to the Rescue, and used this graphic organizer to help plan and sequence our thoughts.

For several days we practiced writing our opinions about basic things (best animal, best fruit, best sport) to get us used to backing up our opinions with reasons.
