Weekly News for 2-P 10-18-24
*Sneakers Mondays for PE
*Library books due back on Wednesdays
*This week we completed the unit 3 test in math that focused on number patterns. We grew our skills by counting by 2,s 5s, and 10s within 3 digit numbers. We will continue to practice that skill as it can be a tricky one. We also practiced making arrays and equal addition sentences. Our next unit will center on problem solving strategies.
*During reading workshop we worked on reading realistic fiction and identified this genre as books that are made up, but COULD really happen. We read a lot of realistic fiction - next week we will tackle this genre in writing workshop so this helped us get prepared.
*In writing workshop we took our folk tales through revision and editing and published them. The kids really wanted to type them, so they learned to create a google doc and typed their own stories (with some help from Mrs. Pols). Our grammar tie-in for this week was working on compound subject sentences and using conjunctions (and, or) as we write more complex sentences.
*We did -all and -alk words in spelling. During UFLI phonics we worked on -ed endings and -ing endings.
*Our Go2 Science work had us exploring lots of fossils with Beth and Curtis. So many animal teeth to look at! (We got the chance to dig in our own specimen trays this week and had fun searching for “fossils” just like Beth and Curtis!). We are gathering evidence to help support or refute the hypothesis. Next week is our last week of the mission and we will need to analyze all the data we have collected.
*In our Mystery Science work we completed an investigation about birds and how you could design a bird feeder to attract particular birds. This involves thinking about how birds eat, what they eat and how we can make bird feeders safe from cats. We had a lot of fun building the prototypes. We also completed our animal biodiversity study by examining the different habitats of bats who live in Bracken Cave in Texas. We learned that they also live under a bridge in the city nearby. Our observations helped us record what types of animals or plants lived in each habitat.
*We kicked off our first social studies unit by learning about what historians do and how they use primary and secondary sources to learn about the past. It was fun to look at lots of different examples of these sources.
