Weekly News for 2-P 10-25-24
*Sneakers Mondays for PE and water bottles every day
*Library books due back on Wednesdays
*We have Chewonki here on Monday morning for “Mammals of Maine!” Thanks to our PTA for providing this enrichment activity!
*In math we learned how to solve word problems using addition and subtraction equations. Part of this is reading a problem carefully to figure out what the unknown quantity is. We used “part-part-whole” diagrams to help us organize our information.
*During reading workshop we continued to read a lot of realistic fiction and identify its traits as a genre. Kids had a lot of fun choosing their own realistic fiction books to explore and this helped them write stories that fit into this category.
*On Thursday we participated in Jumpstart’s, “Read for the Record Day,” and loved hearing Piper Chen Sings read aloud by the authors. We drew pictures of the story and identified the important themes: Don’t give up on your dreams. Don’t let fear keep you from doing what you want to do. Persevere when things get tough.
*In writing we planned our realistic fiction stories by mapping out characters, setting, plot and the beginning, middle and end. We also wrote our full drafts and learned how to do a peer writing conference. Our grammar tie-in was learning to use pronouns in our writing!
*Our phonics work focused on open and closed syllables. In spelling we focused on -ng and -nk digraphs.
*Our Go2 Science work brought us to the end of the mission. Beth and Curtis shared a very important bone that they discovered. Is it deinonychus? It was our job to look at all the evidence and make a determination about the hypothesis. We had mixed opinions about it with some kids feeling it was true and others that it was false. Some students advocated for a “maybe” decision, as they felt we saw some evidence but not quite enough.
*We did another Mystery Science lesson about our skull as part of a mini-unit on the skeleton. We learned about why the skull is so important and made fun skull masks.
*Our social studies work this week focused on chronological thinking and how timelines can share the events of history. We made our own timelines about our lives and our second grade days. We learned about past, present and future. We also found out about calendar words like year, decade, score and century! Make sure you see their timelines in their take home folders (inside the Weekly Studies issue).
