Weekly News 4-18-25

 Weekly News for 2-P 4-18-25

*In math we practiced mentally subtracting 10 and 100 and then worked on two subtraction strategies - the first was decomposing one number and subtracting on an open number line and the other was counting on or up from the smaller number. We did our first regrouping lesson on Friday too.

*This week in Go 2 Science Beth and Curtis showed us their techniques for measuring a REALLY BIG tree. The biodiversity we saw was off the charts - so many new and unusual animals abound in Borneo. Later in the week we got to go along to a palm plantation. We learned lots about palm trees and how palm oil is made and included in many foods.

*In writing we spent the week revising our book reports in numerous ways. We made sure we had solid reasons to support our opinions, added predicate expanders that told when/where/how and removed any weak sentences. Then we turned to our editing checklists to proofread. We are learning to find our own errors and Mrs. Pols conferenced with everyone to help them get their pieces in tip-top shape for publishing.

*In reading workshop we worked in small groups to practice answering questions about books. We are learning to answer a question with a complete sentence and to carefully read a question to be sure we are answering what was asked. This can be a challenging skill so we are building our skills bit by bit!

*Our focus was on digraphs in spelling this week. During our phonics time we learned about less common spelling patterns, such as alternate long a (ey, ei, aigh) and alternate long u patterns (ue, ew, eu). These are some tough patterns! We also worked on synonyms.
