Weekly News for 2-P 5-2-25
*In math we worked on the 3 main strategies for solving 3 digit subtraction problems; counting UP, decomposing one number to subtract and adjusting the numbers to friendlier ones. We also continued to practice the strategy of using base 10 blocks to regroup or trade when needed.
*This week in Go 2 Science Beth and Curtis observed how seeds glide through the air and spent time with orangutans. Then we got to watch them collect evidence at a palm plantation and saw a crocodile in the river rapids they were rafting in! We had lots of good questions for them.
*This week we kicked off our annual bird expedition and will be integrating science into our reading and writing for the remainder of the year. This is a highly engaging unit that helps students gain research practice and synthesizes many of the skills we have learned in second grade. We began by studying the characteristics that make a bird a bird. Then we learned about their anatomy and how their beaks help them survive. We also learned about the different types of beaks and what their purpose is.
*In writing we worked on how to ask questions about a research topic, how to record sources we used and how to take notes from these sources. We chose two birds to research; the crow and the chickadee. We gathered information to answer our questions and are working to compare and contrast the two birds.
*Our focus was on digraphs in spelling this week. During our phonics time we learned about less common spelling patterns, such signal vowels, and alternate ch and gn sounds and silent t words!
