Reading Detectives in Writing Workshop

Today our young writers learned how to be "reading detectives" as they read a piece of their writing.  We began with our writing partners, comparing two pages of a short story and quickly noticed one page had no punctuation and SEVEN ANDS in it!  The other page used complete sentences and periods without repeating the word AND.  Second graders agreed that the first page was not fun to read and didn't sound very good. We practiced how to fix this type of problem in a story and then met with out writing partners again to practice the skill of finding and fixing these errors in our own stories. It was a huge success and students collaborated so well with each other.  We will have many opportunities to refine our skill as "reading detectives" in daily writing workshop!
