Highlights of the Week

Snack and a math game!

We played an odd and even dice  game to reinforce our understanding of pairs.

In writing workshop we spent a lot of time practicing how to know if a story was a watermelon (big story, wide topic) or a seed (small moment, narrow focus).  Our goal is to choose seed stories for strong small moment writing.

We observed and tracked our mealworms in our scientist's notebooks as they looked on week one.

During math we explored our math reference books, which has all kinds of real world applications of our math topics.

This anchor chart was a focus of our writing time - how to use strategies to make our stories come to life as we write.

We worked in our scientist's notebooks to record our thinking about where insects live.

We used magnifying glasses to observe our mealworms and recorded our observations.

One writing lesson had us using magnifying glasses to study shells and practice writing details about the shell to show how we could zoom in on it closely.

Some students compared the shell to ice cream swirls or bird feathers.

We put our mealworms on plates when we observe them so we can see how they move and eat.

Scientist at work!

In math we also played a game called "Fishing for 10" to help us solidify our fact base of facts that make 10.
