Highlights of the Week

In math we played the Money Exchange Game to help us regroup ones, tens and hundreds.

These students are involved in a verb hunt, trying to list and find as many action words as they can for our class verb chart.

Students are learning to use this mini anchor chart to help them craft a solid ending to their narratives.

After a lesson on doubles facts we played a fun dice game with friends to help us practice those doubles.

This group is having snack and playing a math game.

To warm up for math on Thursday we listed all the doubles facts we could in five minutes.

During one science session we watched short video clips of dragonflies in action and then read a text about them.  Students recorded facts they learned on this graphic organizer.

On Friday morning we found our first darkling beetle had hatched.  To the left is one pupa and some shedded skin, plus apple (their moisture source).

In reading workshop we practiced using the BHH framework to deeply discuss books.  More on this next week as we delve into it again.

Students are keeping track of mealworm changes.

We continue to write and illustrate small moment stories.

On Friday we began setting writing goals with Mrs. Pols using a second grade rubric (writing checklist).  This involved individual writing conferences where I looked carefully at a student's writing samples to pick the most important goal or two that will help them bring their writing to the next level.

We use "Quick Look" cards like the ones above to help us do mental math efficiently.  On Friday we worked on how combinations of 10 can be another tool in this box!

In small groups we read about urban, suburban and rural communities. 

We continue to refine our understanding of what genre a book falls into and WHY it fits that category.
