Our Work this Week:
*In spelling we worked on c,k and ck words. We sorted these words, did dictation with them, worked on vocabulary, proofreading and using them in context. Next week we will be reviewing the last 5 units. If your child has already mastered the words they will not have a list to practice. Our grammar work reviewed past skills and added possessive nouns vs. plural nouns.
*During math we learned to use an open number line to solve problems, by counting up sets of 10. We also began to use “start change” diagrams to help us solve word problems. We will add on to this with other visual diagrams for effective problem solving next week. During the remote sessions we reviewed making change, using the fewest coins possible to make a money amount, and also worked on counting by quarter automatically. This is a good skill to practice with your child, as it helps them to have that pattern under their belt.
*In reading workshop we continued to investigate how we can name a character’s traits by thinking about what they do, say and think. We are building our vocabulary bank of traits and expanded into some more complicated characters who showed determination, perseverance and courage!
*Writing workshop. We kicked off a new genre of writing this week as we delve into the world of opinion writing. We got familiar with what an “opinion” is and then did some short prompts to learn how to structure a paragraph with a beginning sentence, supporting detail sentences and a conclusion. Students used a model to help them do this and learned to use transition words/phrases, such as “Also,” and “Another reason I think this is.” Next week we will begin to write book recommendation letters that include our opinion about books, characters and more!
*Music was our special this week. We practiced the scales, played instruments and made some beautiful music.
