Weekly News for 2-P
12-16-22
*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!
*12/22/22-1/2/23 is Winter Break!
*In math we continued to work on strengthening our place value sense and learned how to write numbers in expanded notation. We also worked on measurement and the need for standard measuring tools. Students used personal rulers to measure items in inches and centimeters.
*During reading workshop we read more nonfiction, identified nonfiction text features (captions, bold words, headings, table of contents) and recorded facts we learned. Students also read nonfiction digitally on Pebble Go and RAZ Kids - where they could select topics of interest to them.
*In writing workshop we worked on building up our realistic fiction stories for a few pages BEFORE introducing the problem or conflict. We also took time to fine tune more details about our characters so that we can add interesting tidbits into each story; such as their favorite holiday or book. We do “The Daily Edit” to start each writing workshop as we practice how to proofread for capitalization, punctuation and spelling errors.
*In science we learned about water, sunlight and plant growth and whether a plant can grow without sunlight. We planted radish seeds, one set in the sun and one in complete darkness. We are watching them closely to see what will happen. Ask your child about our surprise results on Friday!
*Our spelling work was long e patterns (ee, ea). Our phonics work centered on more silent e words; specifically long u and then reviewing with all the other vowels. In grammar we built on previous work with parts of speech, vowel sounds and editing.
