Weekly News for 2-P 5-19-23
*We will be having our annual Beach Day for grades 1 AND 2 at Reid State Park on June 20th. If you would like to join us please be sure to fill out a volunteer form and return it to school right away. If you filled it out earlier this year you are all set!
*In math we have worked on equal shares and refining our understanding of halves, thirds and fourths. In addition, we have been practicing our time and money skills and learning to write money amounts in dollars/cents notation. Students are practicing subtraction facts daily and are making gains in adding multi digit numbers.
*We kicked off our annual bird exploration this week. Students enjoyed seeing lots of bird artifacts at our gallery walk! We learned about the characteristics of a bird and their anatomy. We also got familiar with their feet and beaks as we began to identify how particular feet and beaks help a bird function. Next week we study a seed eater; the blue jay!
*Our spelling focus was r controlled vowels. Next week we tackle digraphs. In phonics work we concentrated on suffixes - ly, -less, -ful.
*We made sure to fit in some poetry writing this week as well. We learned about how poets choose precise words, how they sometimes use patterns and also that you can SHOW, not TELL, how you feel in a poem through details. The kids are busily writing new poems and publishing them in their own special anthology. They are incredible poets!
