Week 2 Photos

 Weekly News 9-15-23

*Sneakers Thursdays for PE

*Library books due back on Wednesdays

*Please send a backup pair of clothes for your child’s locker.

Thanks for your support with homework folders this week!

MATH    We have begun Unit 1 of Everyday Math. We’ve worked on skip counting, number grid puzzles, counting and recognizing coins and equivalent names for numbers. We are reviewing number formation as needed and using math tools such as pattern block templates and number grids. Students love to use slates to practice mental math work every day! We are playing lots of games to build our fact knowledge.

READING    We have been reading books and writing about them. I have assessed each student’s reading and will use this information to set individual reading goals and plans. I will share this initial information with you soon. Students are doing Lexia daily, at their own level, which gives them sequential instruction that responds to their needs as they work.

SCIENCE  Our first unit is on animal biodiversity. We built background knowledge about animals, their habitats and care-taking habits. Now we are in our first Mystery Science investigation exploring animal classification. Ask your child to tell you about the mystery of Bracken Cave!

WRITING    We kicked off our narrative writing unit and are writing stories that stretch out important moments in our lives. We are learning to add details to tell our story across many pages.  This class is doing so well picking a true small moment rather than a large, wide topic! We have spent time understanding the parts of a complete sentence as well.

SPELLING/PHONICS  We have completed our first spelling unit on short a words (we are also reviewing short a in our phonics program). Our spelling program gives students many opportunities to practice their words through a variety of language activities such as rhyming, using context clues, proofreading, analogies and more! Our newest second graders are learning the new spelling routines quickly. Next week is short e, which is often a more challenging sound for kids to hear.

*We have worked hard on our school and classroom procedures. We are building our work stamina back up. Our class community is forming quite nicely and we are a kind and supportive group!

Roll and Read Game

Sorry this is upside down- google photos is not cooperating on this Friday evening. We predicted what could be making all the "poo" in Bracken Cave.

More (sideways!) predictions about the animals in Bracken Cave

Partner work to make a number scroll to 1,000!

Playing the number grid game in math

A little inside recess mid week was pretty fun.

Busy scroll workers!

Each kiddo has a set of these blocks for inside recess, free choice, etc. They love them!

Writers are already creating stories!

We all have tiny topic notepads to brainstorm our writing ideas in.

More writing (sorry, sideways again)
