*We will be having our annual Beach Day for grades 1 AND 2 at Reid State Park on June 10th. If you would like to join us please be sure to fill out a volunteer form on the RSU 1 website right away. If you filled it out earlier this year you are all set!
*We have been working on our year end math assessment daily. This week we also did lots of practice with reading data and both regrouping algorithms. Math facts are also a big focus for students right now. Second graders should know all addition and subtraction facts through 20 by the end of the year. This really helps them be ready to tackle the math work of 3rd grade.
*Our social studies work focused on maps again. We learned about satellites and legends. We also practiced finding north, south, east and west on maps.
*Our Tuesday visit with Beth and Curtis from Go2 Science was incredible! The kids were so excited to see them as they walked into school. (So were the teachers!) We explored fossils and practiced matching them to the animals they came from. We had lots of time to ask questions and were surprised at the end as they uncovered a giant T-Rex skull!
*This week we wrote rough drafts of our owl reports and met with Mrs. Pols to edit and revise them. We took care to do quality final drafts and then practiced realistic owl drawings. Our final projects were completed (see photos on the blog!) and we were so proud of our owl knowledge.
*Mid-week we began to study a water bird, the loon. Our research has taken the form of videos, books and bird guides. Students are much more independent taking notes on our graphic organizer. We will create posters to share our loon knowledge next week and then tackle our final bird project, an individual research project.
*Our spelling and phonics work was signal vowels for soft c and soft g (e,i,y) and alternate spellings for ch, gn, gh and silent t. As the phonics patterns get more challenging we are adding more vocabulary work to understand the meaning of the words AND learn to spell them!
