Weekly News 2-14-25

 Weekly News for 2-P 2-14-25

*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!

*In math we introduced the centimeter and meter. Students used metric rulers and meter sticks to measure items around the room. We did a lot of work on finding everyday objects that can help us remember the lengths of feet, inches, yards, meters and centimeters. We also solved word problems about measuring.

*In social studies this week we worked more on our mapping skills and practiced finding locations with a compass rose. We loved singing the “Continents Song.” In early March we will have a virtual field trip with USM’s Osher Map library to compliment our map unit!

*In writing we began a two week research project on habitats, which will be a photo essay! Students chose a habitat to research, using Pebble Go and various texts on their topic. They took notes about the habitat’s temperature, plant life, and animal life. On Wednesday we began to draft our first paragraph. We spent time drawing the illustrations that will accompany our report. Our grammar tie-in was learning to recognize appostives and we will learn to use them in our reports.

*Our focus was on -oo words in spelling this week. During our phonics time we practiced suffixes (er, est, ly).

*In reading workshop we practiced how to compare and contrast. We read texts about two habitats and found the similarities and differences between them. We also did this with fictional texts.

*In Go2 Science Beth and Curtis brought us along Beth and Curtis take a bumpy boat ride to Bird Island. The coral reef was full of amazing animals! On Friday we completed this mission as Beth and Curtis took a final boat ride to test their hypothesis. We were so excited as Curtis saw a wall of sharks! We then took time to analyze the evidence and decide if the hypothesis is true. Each child decided whether or not they think there is a connection between reef health and shark life!

We finished Mission Sharks and analyzed the evidence.

We wrote our conclusions.

We felt the evidence was clear that the healthy a reef is, the more sharks can be found!
