Highlights of the Week

Emma from Chewonki had us listen to the different owl calls.

Emma passed around owl specimens like talons so we could feel them and look at them closely.

First we met the screech owl!

When the great horned owl came out we were captivated!

Some of the specimens we explored

We asked lots of good questions about the live owls.

It was fun to see how much each owl weighed.

Getting to see how an owl's hearing helps them hunt

The feathers were fun to look at and we could try to flap them to see how owl's feathers let them fly silently.

Owl vision and owl feathers!

What to do on a rainy dat at recess?  Build a domino and card village!

Or play with marbles!

Sample of rough draft work on loon facts

Each student had a checklist to guide them through the steps of the loon research process.

This student it hard at work translating her notes into a rough draft.

All students researched the loon with common texts and recorded pertinent facts.

Research, writing and illustrating in progress!

We did some amazing drumming in music this week!  These kids have rhythm!

Happy reader at the book swap!

The kids were overjoyed to choose books at the annual book swap.

These students are on to their last bird project, researching a bird of their choice.

And another one!

On Friday we finished the 4th and final book in the Cat Pack series.  We wrote about our favorite parts and characters.  We loved these books and it was hard to close the final book.  I promised next week for read aloud is "Mrs. Pols's Top Picture Book Favorites that I haven't read to you yet this year, that you have to hear before you leave second grade!"
