Highlights of the Week

On Monday we enjoyed a special birthday treat for one of our classmates!

Emma from Chewonki wowed us with her Bugmobile presentation.  We learned all about ARTHROPODS!

One of our students dressed up as a fly and we named all the insect body parts with ease.

We loved seeing artifacts like this shedded tarantula skin.
Students got to see a real, live tarantula and learn all about it.

During writer's workshops students are using their new "Quick Word" handbooks for writers to help them edit their spelling.

After the presentation we got to explore a variety of arthropod related artifacts.

Students explore a crustacean - the crab!

Another second grader dressed up as a lobster as we learned about the crustaceans.

We also got familiar with millipedes.

On Wednesday we had fun creating our own pumpkins to decorate our lockers.

Our Harvest Party was a nice time to enjoy snacks together as a class.  We work hard and it was great to relax and have some fun!  Thanks to the parents for the yummy snacks.

Students ate and chatted and worked on a fun puzzle packet together.

Most days during math we take about 8 minutes to do our Rocket Math practice to help us increase our fact power.

Small guided reading groups often work on different things with Mrs. Pols.  This group did a great job identifying inside and outside traits of a shabby, but polite cat in the popular series Henry and Mudge.

Ms. Luchies has challenged our school to read 4,000 picture books for National Picture Book month.  We are reading like crazy and keeping track of how many picture books we read.

Our new technology skill this week was to learn to do a padlet.  Each child made their own addition (about their Halloween costume) and we were able to see our friends comments appear together.

In reading workshop we continued to work on author's message and how the text leads us to a certain message.

We did lots of editing and revising and illustration work in writing workshop all week long.

Here's our class padlet!

Our new favorite math game is Salute.  It's a fabulous game to practice math facts and finding the difference between two numbers.  Directions to play are on the back of this week's Friday letter.  You can play with a regular deck of cards.
