 Week 4 News

Thank you to all of you who have been supporting second graders with their books and practice sheets on the home days.  I appreciate the extra time and attention you are giving the kids and I applaud you - so many kids are returning this work daily!  Next week the expectation increases a bit for home days.  Check take home folders for a yellow handout that outlines the expectations.  Here is a video if you prefer to get your information this way: Parent Video Home Learning

Here’s a look at what we did this week:

*In math we solved a word problem that targeted addition and subtraction and critical thinking.  We also reviewed and practiced name collection boxes which is about learning about equivalencies.  In math boxes we focused on skills like place value, addition and subtraction, comparing number sentences and solving word problems. We also learned to login to the Everyday Math site to play a math game.  The kids had fun finding a game.  All of these games reinforce important math concepts and skills.

*In spelling we reviewed more long vowel patterns and silent e words also.  We also practiced rhyming and beginning/middle/ending word sounds.  

*During reading workshop we enjoyed fictional read alouds and then worked on identifying important story elements; characters, setting, problem and solution.  We will continue to work on this learning target next week to give students more opportunities to deepen their understanding.

*We began grammar and language skill work.  Some of the skills we practiced were: uppercase and lowercase letters, vowels, end punctuation, nouns, verbs, adjectives, synonyms and antonyms.  Kids enjoy playing with words and were proud of all the things they were able to do with this work.

*We had a lot of fun writing and completing our first small moment pieces in writing workshop.  We continue to practice what makes a story a small moment: a specific moment in time, narrowed down and that happens in a short amount of time.  We play “Watermelon or Seed” to start workshop time and kids are making gains in understanding which topics fall into which category.  We are learning to stretch our stories down the page and across many pages, with lots of details.  The kids were excited to share their writing at the end of the week!
