Important Notes:
*After vacation students can choose new library books on Tuesday!
*Run Club starts the Monday after break. Students in the “Early” arrival group will just stay with me until 2:55 dismissal and then join Mr. Hutchings for Run Club. Please send an extra afternoon snack for your child.
Our Work this Week:
*In spelling we worked on vowel dipthongs - oi and oy! In grammar we had more practice with possessive nouns, contractions, making plurals, and making compound words.
*During math we learned how to solve two step word problems. We also learned how to make ballpark estimates (numbers that end in zero, “friendly” numbers that are easy to work with). We also learned the partial sums algorithm to add multi digit numbers. The week concluded with the unit 6 test and cumulative assessment for the last few units. Look for math portfolios with new information after break.
*In reading workshop we shifted gears and read all kinds of poetry. We read rhyming poems, silly poems, animal poems, nature poems and more. We learned how to summarize what a poem is about with specific details. It was fun to reread poems together fluently and expressively. There was also a lot of practice with identifying rich language in poems. After break we will write our own poetry for a couple of weeks!
*Writing workshop. This week we completed our opinion writing unit. Each student chose two favorite books and wrote book recommendation letters to a friend. They planned out their letters first, with details and opinions. They also added a brief summary of the book and a favorite part. All students are practicing editing their writing - this usually takes some guidance from Mrs. Pols!
*Guidance was our special this week! We worked on cooperation, conflict resolution, internet safety and how to be a good sport and a good friend.
