Weekly News

 Weekly News 4-9-21

Important Notes:

*Next week students can choose new library books on Tuesday!

*Run Club starts the Monday after break.  If you need a form just let me know.  Students in the “Early” arrival group will just stay with me until 2:55 dismissal and then join Mr. Hutchings for Run Club.

Our Work this Week:

*In spelling we worked on consonant blends.  We sorted our blend words, worked with synonyms and antonyms and practiced using them in context.  Each week we practice proofreading with them also!  In grammar we practiced those tricky possessive nouns and continued to work on common rules for making plural nouns, as well as identifying parts of speech.

*During math we worked with bar graphs and other data.  We also used “QQD” (quantity, quantity, difference) diagrams, to help us solve comparing number stories.  This visual model helps students SEE what it means to plug in their known information and then find the missing part.  We did a lot of problem solving this week with various diagrams and the students are using these very successfully.

*In reading workshop we continued to work on forming opinions about a book.  We added some nonfiction reading this week and practiced backing up our opinions with solid reasons.  When we read a Scholastic News article called “Jelly Fish or Plastic Bag?” the kids had a lot of strong feelings about helping save animals and the environment by not using plastic bags and not littering.

*Writing workshop.  This week we wrote 2 to 3 more book letters.  Students wrote a letter recommending Shark Lady, The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean’s Most Fearless Scientist.  We learned how to follow up on our reasons with an extra detail to make our letters stronger, longer and more convincing to the readers.  We practiced using transition phrases and including our favorite part of a book in our letter.

*Library was our special this week and we read a lot of poetry for National Poetry Month!

Working on our opinions!

That spring weather has us enjoying extra outdoor time!
