Our Work this Week:
*In spelling we worked on -oo words and the short/long sounds they can make. We also began another unit on “words writers use” - those important commonly used words that we want second graders to spell correctly anytime they use them (ex: want, many, from).
*During math we completed the unit 7 assessment and kicked off unit 8, learning all about 2-D shapes. We have learned about polygons, specifically pentagons, hexagons, triangles and quadrilaterals. We also learned about parallel lines. Building shapes with geoboards was a fun way to practice each shape. Second graders are getting familiar with shape attributes and are using the terms sides, angles, and vertices fluently.
*In reading/writing workshop and science we became blue jay experts. We used videos, books, and a special research packet to learn all about the blue jay. Using a graphic organizer, we learned to take notes and recorded information about the blue jay’s beak, feet, feathers, nesting habits, habitat, size and special features. Our next step was to learn to write a topic sentence and create complete sentences from our notes. Students wrote a rough draft of their informational report and then worked with me to edit and revise before copying a final draft in their best handwriting. During the week each child used a drawing guide to make a careful sketch of a blue jay. Practice pays off! Finally, they created a beautiful pop up project. I was proud of how hard they worked. We have already begun to study our next bird - the owl! During this unit reading and writing are fully integrated and we are doing tons of nonfiction reading and writing.
Special: In Art Mrs. Devin integrated lots of bird art projects into our week! We also used shapes to make inventions. Lots of terrific art was created!
