*Run Club next week - Monday is the last practice and the race is next Saturday the 29th! Please send an extra afternoon snack for your child and a water bottle.
*Chewonki joins us Monday virtually for “Owls of Maine.” Thanks to the PTA for this exciting opportunity!
Our Work this Week:
*In spelling we worked on -ow words and the short/long sounds they can make. We also reviewed our “words writers use” some more- those important commonly used words. Contractions are up next!
*During math we did lots of geometry work, practicing our new vocabulary related to 2D and 3D shapes. We reviewed parallel lines and the names for 3, 4, 5, and 6 sided shapes. Students also learned how to tile a surface with equal shapes (the beginning of understanding area). We worked with equal groups, repeated addition and multiplication as well!
*In reading/writing workshop and science we became owl experts. We used videos, books, and a special research packet to learn all about this bird of prey. With our graphic organizer and informational resources we took notes - we are getting good at it now! After we finished our notes, we analyzed the owls’ special design features and wrote our reports. Our ability to write topic sentences and conclusions is growing. We are also making great gains with writing complete sentences from our notes. Students practiced drawing realistic owls with several choices of owl drawing guides. We edited and revised our work before creating an owl cover for our report. Next up is a water bird; the loon!
Special: In Library Ms. Luchies taught us all about “trickster tales.” We used a graphic organizer to look at the characteristics of a trickster tale and enjoyed these funny stories with clever characters where a lesson is always learned by the end!
