Weekly News for 2-P 10-29-21
*Sneakers Tuesdays for PE and water bottles every day. Library books back for Friday!
*Our math thinking this week included work on name collection boxes and frames and arrows (where students have to follow and identify counting patterns). We spent time reviewing concepts for our unit 2 assessment, which is now complete. Unit 3, “More Fact Strategies,” is up next.
*During reading workshop we turned our focus to oral and written retelling of a story. Students worked on recounting a fictional story in sequence, including characters, setting, problem and solution. This is important work that helps them demonstrate their understanding. We practiced this with partners and the kids had fun reading and retelling with a friend.
*In writing workshop we learned some craft moves from author Jane Yolen, like making our reader wait (building suspense), using comparisons as we write and using sounds and bold words to bring our reader into the story. Our writing stamina increases daily!
*Our spelling pattern this week was the “al” vowel sound. We practiced these words through sorting, proofreading, and using context clues. Our grammar work reinforced contractions, punctuation, prefixes, verbs, vowel teams and accurate spelling.
*We took a pause in our plant unit to do some fun October-themed Mystery Science explorations. We learned about our skeletons and did a fun art project that helped us see how many bones we have in our hands. We also learned about the important job our skulls do to support our brains, eyes, ears, mouth and nose.
*Friday we had a day of fun as a class community. There were special snacks, art projects, Halloween stories, a math game called “BOO Bump” and some spooky writing. It was nice to celebrate all our hard work over the last two months with a joyful day together!
