 Weekly News for 2-P

3-11-22

*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!

*In math we worked on units of measure in the US Customary System (inches, yards, feet) and the Metric System (cm, decimeters, meters.  We measured lots of things in our classroom, including ourselves.  Our estimating is improving.  Then we used our measuring skills to collect and record data on our arm spans and our standing long jump attempts.  We made line plots with this data on Friday.  Addition facts are being practiced daily!

* During reading workshop we read a slew of great books for Women’s History Month!  We learned about Sonia Sotomayer, Bobbi Gibb, Elizabeth Blackwell and Jane Goodall.  Students also read biographies in our computer program, EPIC.  They recorded the important accomplishments of these women. We used a reading genre wheel to try out different types of books this week and students filled in circles each time they tried a book in a new category.  We explored biographies, fairy tales and poetry every day.

*In science we completed the Mystery Science lesson called “How can you unlock a door using a magnet?” To investigate magnetic attraction and repulsion we tried to build a useful product; a magnetic lock that can open a paper door.  Tricky stuff!  We capped off this unit by designing and building our own ice boards.  Students worked in cooperative pairs and put their new knowledge into play with their creative designs.  We also revised our catapults in teams to try to get our ping pong balls to go farther.  Most of them worked!

*Our spelling focus was inflectional endings; words that end in -s or -es.  Next week we will tackle -ed and -ing words.  As part of our grammar work we focused on exercises to help us expand sentences with specific details to make them more complex and interesting.

*Ms. Luchies kicked off the annual Chickadee Award season - students have been loving the chance to hear each book that has been nominated.  We heard stories this week from Mr. Hutchings, Mrs. Devin, Ms. Luchies, Mrs. Pratt and Ms. Macaulay.  Kids love rating each book in their special booklets.  It is fun to have so many special people read to us!
