5-20-22

 Weekly News for 2-P 5-20-22

*Next Wednesday, May 25th is the Open House/Art Show from 5:00-6:00 p.m.

*We will be resuming our tradition of Beach Day for grades 1 AND 2 at Reid State Park on June 14th.  If you would like to join us please be sure to fill out a volunteer form and return it to school right away.  If you filled it out earlier this year you are all set!

*In math we are working on the lengthy year-end assessment in small chunks each day. Then we are using our time to refine and solidify important skills.  This week we worked a lot on time and money, problem solving and the trade first algorithm.  We continue to practice math facts every day.

*Our literacy and science time was focused on a bird of prey, the owl.  We read books, watched videos and used our owl research packet to learn all about this fascinating bird.  Each day students read a book in our Epic library to build their owl knowledge and vocabulary.  We recorded what we learned on our graphic organizer as we gained information about beaks, feet, habitat, feathers, diet, size and special features.  Students used their notes to write a report. There was a big jump in our independence since this was our second report.  Throughout the week we practiced drawing realistic looking owls, using drawing guides.  We designed an owl cover for our reports.

*We loved our second Chewonki visit of the year, “Owls of Maine.” Kyle taught us all about how owl adaptations that help them thrive.  We investigated many owl artifacts and met two real owls! Thanks to the PTA for providing this wonderful opportunity.

*Our spelling focus was r controlled vowels.  Next week we tackle more digraphs. We worked on editing and writing strong sentences too and also kept working in our spiraling grammar program.

*We made sure to fit in some poetry writing this week as well.  The kids are busily writing new poems and publishing them in their own special anthology.
