*In math we completed the first unit with lessons on base 10 blocks and an

introduction to the concept of “area” through tiling rectangles. Students are

working hard on the Unit 1 Assessment and that will come home soon for you

to review.  Unit 2 starts next week and focuses on fact strategies.

*During reading workshop we continued to practice identifying story elements

in fictional stories.  We also practiced what it means to categorize a book as fiction.

In our phonics program we are reviewing all short vowel sounds and building

great automaticity with reading and writing short vowel words. Kids love building

words with their magnetic letters!

*In writing workshop we learned strategies for writing strong endings. Each child

is working on individual goals during writing time that will help move them along

as a writer. We practiced editing our own writing with a special tool that reminds

us what to look for when rereading our work: Capitalization Understanding Punctuation Spelling: CUPS!

*We have completed our third spelling unit on short i words. Next up is short o

words.  In addition to daily practice in our spelling books using the words in a

variety of ways, we also do dictation with our words to use the words in context

and practice sentence mechanics.

This week our science work centered on finishing our animal classification and

on a new investigation called “Why Do Frogs Ribbit?” This lesson is a case study

in biodiversity using the frogs of North America. In the activity, Who's Calling?,

students learn to identify frogs by their unique calls and investigate which of two

locations has a greater variety of frogs. After listening to recordings of frog calls,

students create words that will remind them of the sounds, and then use those

words to identify frog sounds in different environments.  We had a great time

working as a team to figure out these frog sounds!

*In Go2 Science we got to see what the homes in Kenya looked like.  Beth and

Curtis taught us how they test areas for groundwater that could be useful.

We got to vote for the site that would offer the best chance of producing

water. The kids noticed so many differences between daily life there and

daily life here. We did a lot of comparing and contrasting.
