10-6-22

 Weekly News for 2-P 10-6-22

*Sneakers Wednesdays for PE and water bottles every day

*In math we began unit 2, which focuses on addition strategies.  We reviewed grouping by 10s, how to write addition number stories and how to exchange money amounts in groups of 10.  We played Place Value Uno ( a big hit) and the Money Exchange Game!

*During reading workshop we worked on identifying what makes a book fiction and explored different types of fiction (fantasy, realistic fiction, folklore).  Students used their new reader’s notebooks to record their evidence that a book was fiction.

*In writing workshop we learned how you can take one page of a story and make it better by adding some meaningful details.  We focused on quality endings to our small moment stories and how to reread our work to edit for capitalization and punctuation. We use our mentor text, Owl Moon, a lot, to help us see examples of strong writing.  This week we also began setting individual goals to improve our writing.  We used a writing checklist to find areas to target.

*We have completed our fourth spelling unit on short o words. Next up is short u words. Some of our spelling and grammar work this week focused on antonyms and synonyms, past tense verbs, proofreading sentences and using prefixes.

*In Go2 Science we got to see Beth and Curtis make food with their Kenyan friends.  We also got to see the workers drill the borehole down into the ground at the test site - 10 meters down.  Then they hit rock and had to start over.  Finding drinkable water is not easy!  On the second day of drilling they had to keep adding rods to the borehole and go down to 65 meters before they hit enough water. It will take up to two weeks to know if the water will be safe to drink.

We chose the wolf for our pumpkin decorating contest and Mrs. Vise's class did the chick!

We revised our writing by adding meaningful details.

Adding just a sentence makes a big difference!

Pumpkin decorators!

Making the wolf's eyes!

This crew was in charge of the wolf's hat!

Small moment page

Playing the money exchange game!

Partners rolled dice to see who could "group" their way to $100 first!

We made Mr. Hutchings a giant birthday card and delivered it to him when we went to PE!

We set goals for becoming better writers and writing down the page with details was one idea.

New game this week - Place Value UNO!

The kids loved taking two cards and building the bigger number....by using the 10s place for the larger card.
