 Weekly News for 2-P 3-3-23

*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!

*In math we practiced making ballpark estimates, using the partial sums algorithm to add multi digit numbers, and introduced subtraction with regrouping (conceptually). We did some measuring work and also built 2-D shapes with rectangles and triangles. We began unit 6 review work on Friday.Next week we will complete the unit 6 assessments.

* During reading workshop we celebrated Read Across America with the always popular morning-announcements-book-trivia (thanks, Ms. Luchies!), and periodic, fun “Drop Everything and Read” sessions on Thursday with exciting “Flashlight Reading” on Friday.  We read a favorite Dr. Seuss book with sound effects and enjoyed lots of buddy reading. Throughout the week we explored more biographies and practiced pulling facts from these nonfiction texts.

*In science we revised our car and ramp experiment to see how we could make our car go farther off the ramp onto the rug. Ideas included a steeper ramp, a different push technique or a new ramp position. Students went through the scientific process again and recorded results in their lab reports. It was so much easier the second time around!

*Our spelling focus was word endings: -ing and -ed.We will work on prefixes next week. In phonics we reviewed -ch,-tch, and -dge endings as well as long vowels in -ild, -ind, -old words.

*We also learned about the branches of government, the president’s role and the constitution.  Kids are loving the educational social studies videos on Brain Pop Jr!
