Weekly News for 2-P 3-10-23
*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!
*In math we completed the unit 6 assessment, the cumulative and mid year assessments, mixed in with lots of games and activities to review important concepts. We will start unit 7 next week!
* During reading workshop we began to learn about how authors can organize texts in different ways. One way is with sequential order (telling about someone’s life in a biography), another is using a “question and answer” format” to relay facts. We are trying to notice how a text is set up to give us information. We will explore more next week.
*In science we completed the Mystery Science lesson called “How can you unlock a door using a magnet?” To investigate magnetic attraction and repulsion we tried to build a useful product; a magnetic lock that can open a paper door. Tricky stuff, but we persevered!
*In science and writing we moved into our third experiment and built our own catapults in teams of three. We revised our designs until we felt they worked successfully. Our question this time was “Will the cotton ball or ping pong ball go farther off the catapult?” We had a great time flinging our testers through the air, collecting data and drawing conclusions. Our hypotheses were accurate!
*Our spelling focus was prefixes (un, dis, re). In phonics we learned about -y at the end of words, making both long i and long e sounds.
*Ms. Luchies kicked off the annual Chickadee Award season - students have been loving the chance to hear each book that has been nominated. We heard stories this week from Mrs. Dimbleby, Mrs. Pols and Mrs. Saufler. Kids love rating each book in their special booklets. It is fun to have guest readers.
