Weekly News for 2-P 6-3-23
*We will be resuming our tradition of Beach Day for grades 1 AND 2 at Reid State Park on June 20th. If you would like to join us please be sure to fill out a volunteer form and return it to school right away. If you filled it out earlier this year you are all set!
*We are working on the lengthy final math assessment in small chunks each day. In addition, we are refining our skills with time/money, fact fluency, problem solving and the algorithms for adding and subtracting with regrouping.
*Our literacy and science time this week was focused on a bird of prey, the owl. We read books, watched video clips and used our owl research packet to learn all about this fascinating bird. Each day students read a book in our Epic library to build their owl knowledge and vocabulary. We recorded what we learned on our graphic organizer as we gained information about beaks, feet, habitat, feathers, diet, size and special features. Students used their notes to write a report. There was a big jump in our independence since this was our second report. Throughout the week we practiced drawing realistic looking owls, using drawing guides. Lastly, we designed an owl cover for our reports and added owl eyes, beaks and feet.
*Our spelling focus was digraph and trigraph words. In phonics work we worked on the doubling rule when making words in the past and present tenses (i.e., sitting, hopped). Thanks for your support reading the UFLI decodable passages for home reading. These re-reads make a big difference in students’ fluency and accuracy with new phonics skills - and the practice positively impacts their spelling too!
