Weekly News 6-9-23

 Weekly News for 2-P 6-8-23

*June 15th - Field Day

*June 16th - Chewonki “Fur, Feathers, & Feet” program

*June 20th - Beach Day

*In math we finished the year-end assessment, which will get passed onto third grade teachers. We used some of our extra math time to work in our online IXL program, targeting our individual math goals. We also did lots of partial sums algorithm practice and fact fluency work.

*Our literacy and science time was focused on a new research project on a water bird, the loon. We read books, watched videos and used our loon research packet to learn all about this fascinating bird. We recorded what we learned on our graphic organizer as we gained information about beaks, feet, habitat, feathers, diet, size and special features. This time our project is a poster and students are creating nonfiction “cutaways,” with facts and quality illustrations. We added a big loon drawing to our poster.  Second graders are proud of their high quality projects. They are pulling so many big skills together in these projects. Next up is our last one - an individual bird research project!

*Our spelling focus was compound words; the last unit of the year.  Next week is

a review week. In phonics work we have been learning doubling rules when

adding suffixes as well as the drop they y rule. Students showed so much

spelling growth on the year end assessment and our UFLI phonics program

has made that happen!

*I am doing year-end reading assessments with students who hadn’t already

met the benchmark - it is amazing to see so much growth!
