Weekly News 10-20-23

 Weekly News for 2-P 10-20-23

*Sneakers Thursdays for PE and water bottles every day *Library books due back on Wednesdays

*Our math work this week centered around strategies for doubles and near doubles facts. Turn-around facts were another skill we practiced. However, we learned that the turn around rule does NOT work for subtraction. We warm up every day with routines that help us think flexibly about numbers; this builds a student's ability to articulate what they are thinking in mathematical terms.

*During reading workshop we worked on identifying the plot (what happens in a story, the characters, setting, action) and the high point (or exciting part) of a story.  Students did a great job figuring out the part of a story where the action came to a head!

*In writing workshop we worked hard on our individual goals each day. One focus for the week was learning to use transition words to move our stories forward (then, next, one time, soon, after, a little later, meanwhile). We also learned to think about our word choice as we write and how action words, sound words and describing words can strengthen our stories. We practice editing our pages for capitals and punctuation several times a week.

*We did short vowel review work in spelling. Next week we take on the -al pattern. We also focused on silent e words in phonics. Some new skills that came up in our grammar program included contractions, finding similar vowel sounds in words, adding details to sentences and combining sentences with the word “and.”

*Our Go2 Science work had us visiting spots both inside and outside the rainforest in Boquette. We talked a lot about the biodiversity in each environment; a variety of plants and animals living in a habitat. We are gathering evidence to help support or refute the hypothesis. Next week is our last week of the mission and we will need to analyze all the data we have collected.

*In our Mystery Science work we are partway through an investigation about birds and how you can design a bird feeder to attract particular birds. This involves thinking about how birds eat, what they eat and how we can make bird feeders safe from cats. The prototype building will take place this coming week!

Sharing our small moment stories

In Guidance Mrs. Sturgeon passes the animal and we share important thoughts!

We loved showing off our favorite small moment books to our classmates.

A little wacky hair doesn't keep us from being math whizzes!

What a fun week!
