Weekly News 10-5-23

 Weekly News for 2-P 10-5-23

*Sneakers Thursday for PE and water bottles every day

*In math we  began unit 2 on addition and subtraction strategies. We started off counting bills ($1, $10, $100) and grouped them before counting mixed amounts. We played the “Money Exchange Game” to practice when we could exchange 10 bills for a bigger bill. We also practiced how to solve and write addition number stories.

*During reading workshop we focused on GENRE. We learned to identify fictional books and cite evidence for a book falling into the fiction category (a made up story, illustrations, characters, setting, problem, solution). We were even able to define a sub-category of genre called realistic fiction; books that showcase a story that could really happen.

*In writing workshop we examined our mentor texts to help us make our own writing stronger. We discovered we can add exciting words to try to bring the story to life. We practiced editing our own writing with our new tool: Capitalization Understanding Punctuation Spelling: CUPS!

*We have completed our fourth spelling unit on short 0 words. Next up is short u words. Our phonics work this week focused on reviewing consonant digraphs (ck, sh, th, wh, ph, nk, ng, ch).

*This week our science work centered on a new investigation called “Why Do Frogs Ribbit?” This lesson is a case study in biodiversity using the frogs of North America. In the activity, “Who's Calling?” students learn to identify frogs by their unique calls and investigate which of two locations has a greater variety of frogs. After listening to recordings of frog calls, students create words that will remind them of the sounds, and then use those words to identify frog sounds in different environments.  We had a great time working as a team to figure out these frog sounds!

*In Go2 Science we got to see where Beth and Curtis are living in Panama. We saw lots of blue morpho butterflies on one field video and learned about their life cycle. We also got to see what a school day is like for the kids in Panama - very different from ours! We found out about the impact of litter on the ocean and environment.

*We loved the “Traveling Planetarium” on Wednesday. Ask your child to tell you what they learned about the night sky. Thanks to the PTA for sponsoring this exciting enrichment activity.
