Weekly News 11-17-23

 Weekly News for 2-P 11-17-23

*Conferences are Monday, November 20th from 12:00-6:00 pm.  If you haven’t signed up yet, there are still spots available. Please sign up by Sunday night so I have you on the schedule before I start teaching Monday morning.

*Monday and Tuesday are half days with noon dismissal.

*Our math thinking this week was focused on strategies for counting up and back, efficient subtraction of 0 and 1, using doubles to subtract and identifying patterns and rules in frames and arrows.

*During reading workshop we honed our ability to determine the author’s message in literature. The students are identifying numerous lessons and themes in each text!

*In writing workshop we planned out our realistic fiction stories by naming the characters, settings, problems and solutions. We try to remember that “we have to get our character into trouble so we can get them OUT of trouble at the end.” Students are being so creative with their series writing! We did lots of author’s sharing so we could hear each other’s imaginative ideas.

*Our spelling pattern this week was vowel-consonant e words.  In our phonics program we worked on open and closed syllable words.

*We completed the science investigation, “Why do seeds have so many different shapes?” Students explored how the structure of seeds enable them to disperse. We focused on seeds that utilize animal structures to aid in their dispersal. In the fun activity, “Seed Travelers,” we developed a model of a fluffy animal (“fluffadoo”) and used it to test how far two seed models with different structures could travel.

Flying our seeds

We often do a "tangle/untangled" challenge in math where we find the error in how a problem is solved and correct it.
