Weekly News 11-3-23

 Weekly News for 2-P 11-3-23

*There is no school next Thursday (Professional Development Day) or Friday (Veterans Day).

*You might have heard we won the Pumpkin Book Character Contest for our wing!  We were VERY excited! The kids worked so hard, in teams, to create all the characters from James and The Giant Peach. They were so creative and collaborative. It made my teacher heart very proud!

*We finished unit 2 in Everyday Math with finding and following number patterns. We spent some time reviewing for the unit 2 assessment and completed that this week. Look for math portfolios late next week. Students loved the opportunity to explore digital Everyday math games this week. They were able to choose games that fit them and had fun exploring and practicing skills.

*During reading workshop we continued to work on sharing opinions about texts. We also worked on pulling facts from nonfiction text. We read books about seeds to build background knowledge for our new science unit. We also practiced reading short passages and answering comprehension questions.

*In writing workshop we finished our last small moment story and turned our attention to beginning to “fancy up” our favorites.  We spent time rereading, editing, revising and adding quality illustrations before we share them with others. We enjoyed a fun “Author’s Celebration” with Mrs. Vise’s class Friday afternoon. It was great to hear all of our friends’ stories.

*Our spelling pattern this week was consonant digraphs, specifically, ng and nk.  We did a lot of work with synonyms, antonyms, vowel teams, nouns and verbs and writing complete sentences with proper capitalization and punctuation. Our phonics work focused on the 3 sounds of the suffix -ed and also using the suffix -ing.

*In science we completed our Animal Biodiversity unit and kicked off our Plant Adaptations unit. Ask your child to tell you about the SUPERBLOOM!  I was so impressed with their deep  knowledge and the questions students had as we worked our way through the beginning of this unit.

Ms. Luchies read us Creepy Carrots so we made our own and decorated our classroom door with them!

Mr. Libby and Mrs. Dimbleby brought us a special Halloween pencil!

Practicing spelling with fun pumpkin boards

We heard a fun reader's theater rendition of Big Pumpkin!

Mrs. Sturgeon worked with us on safe and unsafe Halloween choices.

We had fun playing math games with creepy eyeballs on Halloween.

The Pumpkin Decorators at work....

Eyeball math for the win!

The kids had fun doing a puzzle packet for morning work on Halloween.
