Weekly News 12-15-23

 Weekly News for 2-P 12-15-23

*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!

*A lot of kids are wishing they had a chapstick in their desk - feel free to send one.

*In math we continued to work on strengthening our place value sense and learned how to write numbers in expanded notation. We also worked on measurement and the need for standard measuring tools. Students used personal rulers to measure items in inches and centimeters.

*Our social studies work had us focusing on the different types of communities we belong to. We then learned about the difference between rules and laws. Finally we learned about the constitution. Students are so engaged in learning about history and government. We are loving our first historical fiction read aloud, Calpurnia Tate, Girl Vet.

*During reading workshop we read nonfiction, identified nonfiction text features (captions, bold words, headings, table of contents) and recorded facts we learned. Students also read nonfiction digitally on Pebble Go and RAZ Kids  - where they could select topics of interest to them. They loved the chance to do this research!

*In writing workshop we began our “All About Book” unit by brainstorming topics that we know enough about to fill a 6 page book! We used sticky notes to keep track of our knowledge and sorted them by category to create our chapters or sections. Then we learned to write an introduction. We are using our knowledge of nonfiction books from reading workshop to help us write in this new genre.

.

*Our spelling work was long i  patterns (i_e, y).  Our phonics work centered on r controlled vowels (ar, or, ore, ir, ur, er).
