Week of 1-26-24

 Weekly News for 2-P 1-26-24

*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!

*In math this week we completed the Illustrative Math section B assessment and began the last section of this unit. We worked on strategies to solve story problems and how visual representations can help us find missing addends. We are using a “Three Read” routine with story problems that helps us carefully understand the numbers and language of a word problem. We also practiced using place value to add and subtract two digit numbers.

*In social studies work we investigated the three branches that make up our national government. Students did a sort to categorize the responsibilities of the executive, legislative and judicial branches.

*During reading workshop we worked on a new genre; narrative nonfiction. Students loved these books of true information told in a story format. We especially loved Elizabeth, Queen of the Seas, an elephant seal in New Zealand who made her home in a city.

*In writing workshop we revised last week’s car and ramp experiment to see how we could use force and motion thinking to get the car to go farther off the work. Scientists worked in cooperative groups to make one change to impact the car’s travel distance. Every group had success with this lab report experiment!

*In science we explored the concept of magnetism. In the exploration “What Can Magnets Do?” students got to explore the surprising properties of magnets and experiment with this invisible force that acts at a distance. Using ring magnets and common objects, students saw the push and pull of magnets and how they interact with certain metals.

*Our focus was on inflectional endings in spelling this week (s and es)  In phonics we worked on -oo and -ew sounds.
