Weekly News for 2-P 2-2-24
*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor
shoes daily!
*In math this week we solved story problems in multiple ways and
completed the assessment for the pilot unit of Illustrative Math. We jumped
back into Everyday Math on Friday with Unit 6 which is “Whole Number
Operations and Number Stories.”
*As part of reading workshop we read more narrative nonfiction and discussed
how the authors told these true stories in unique ways. Students love learning
about real-life events in story formats! We are working on main ideas, details
and enduring themes as we read these books.
*Our social studies work focused on how tribal, local and state governments
work. Students enjoyed our “Studies Weekly” video that explained how
tribal nations work.
*Our focus was on words with ed and ing suffixes in spelling this week. We did
-ew vowel teams in phonics and reviewed all the new vowel teams we have
learned in the last few weeks. We used our new favorite game, called
SPARKLE, to practice common spelling patterns and high frequency words
this week.
*In science we completed the Mystery Science lesson called “How can you unlock
a door using a magnet?” To investigate magnetic attraction and repulsion we tried to
build a useful product; a magnetic lock that can open a paper door. On Wednesday
we completed this Mystery Science unit with the culminating performance task:
creating an ice board using our force and motion knowledge. Tricky stuff, but
we persevered! It was a beautiful session full of grit, creativity, teamwork, sharing
ideas and encouraging each other.
*In science and writing we moved into our third experiment and built our own
catapults in teams of three. We revised our designs until we felt they worked
successfully. Our question this time was “Will the cotton ball or ping pong ball
go farther off the catapult?” We had a great time flinging our testers through the
air, collecting data and drawing conclusions. Our hypotheses were accurate!
