Weekly News for 2-P 2-9-24
*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!
*Bring valentines for Wednesday! Thanks to all who have signed up for refreshments for our yogurt parfaits.
*Spirit Week is next week - see the WCS newsletter or Mrs. Pols’s weekly email for details.
*In Unit 6 Everyday Math we worked on comparison number stories using visual diagrams as a tool for solving problems. We also worked on graphing data and solving two step number stories, where we have to read a problem carefully and pay attention to instances of using both subtraction and addition in one word problem. We did review work with telling time and practiced our facts in MathFact Lab every day.
*As part of reading workshop we jumped into Black History Month with a new genre, biography. We are reading lots of books about important black people. Students are using Epic and Pebble Go to explore biographies during independent reading time. It is so motivating for them to choose who to research. Students are creating posters with illustrations and many facts about the subject of each biography. Great research is happening! We had lots of discussions about the history of segregation in our country.
*As a culminating activity in our integrated science and writing unit, students are writing informational books about a topic of their choice. These “All About Books” have a special force and motion section where students explain the way push, pull, friction or gravity is a part of their topic (i.e. swimming, skiing, skating). Students will finish these up early next week and we will shift to opinion writing next!
*It was a focus on prefixes in spelling this week and our phonics work was with -aw vowel teams and -ea words that make short e sounds.
*Beth and Curtis continue to take us on fun adventures in New Zealand. We are learning about so many new animals and how people can impact habitats by introducing new species into an already established environment. Next week is our last week of this mission so we will be looking closely at the evidence to see if the hypothesis is true or not. We have a lot of data to analyze.
