 Weekly News for 2-P 3-1-24

Next week is Read Across America Week. Details are in your child’s take home folder.

*In math we reviewed unit 6 skills (ballpark estimates, using the partial sums algorithm to add multi digit numbers, and solving story problems). Then we completed the Unit 6 assessment and the cumulative assessment for the last two units. Next up is unit 7, “Whole Number Operations, Measurement and Data.”

* During reading workshop we studied a new genre - trickster tales, which are a type of folktale. We learned about the types of characters commonly found in these tales (fools and tricksters), how these stories often have morals, and what traits we can assign to these characters. Students enjoyed reading trickster tales and had fun independently reading them during their reading time.

*This week we kicked off our Wabanaki Studies unit. Students enjoyed our slideshows introducing them to the Wabanaki Nations of Maine and their languages. We investigated maps that showed their lands many years ago compared to today. We got familiar with their connection to nature and practiced saying some of their words for water, moons, leaves and forests. We investigated their words for colors as well. Students are using their Wabanaki Languages

books to record their thinking and new learning.

*Our writing workshop focus was on opinion writing. We learned to write a complete paragraph about a topic where we shared our opinion and gave supporting reasons. Students are learning to use transition words and phrases such as “another reason,” and “also,” to organize their writing. We are writing

clear beginnings and concluding sentences.

*Our spelling focus was diphthongs (ou, ow) and in UFLI phonics we worked on vowel diphthong review and silent letter words.

*We did a Social Studies Weekly unit on citizenship. Students learned what it means to be a good citizen, how you become a citizen and about the different types of communities where a citizen can belong (town, school, classroom, etc).
